“You Never Know”: F1 Champion Lando Norris Hints at Future Indy 500 Run With McLaren
Max Verstappen recently drove a Mercedes AMG GT at the 24 hours of Nürburgring, and it seems he’s not the only Formula 1 driver dreaming of driving outside F1.
Lando Norris, the reigning World Champion in Formula 1, was at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Monday. Norris was hosted by Roger Penske and Tony Kanaan and took pace car laps around the circuit and visited the museum.
He was asked whether he would think about competing at the Indy 500 someday. Norris’ reply was flirty and open-ended. While he didn’t confirm that he would, he hinted that there could be a possibility in the future.
“You never know. I don’t want to say no, I certainly want to try thighs outside Formula 1. I’ve always said, I’m a racing fan.
"I love Formula 1 more than anything, but at the same time, I love everything. I love bikes, I love rally, I love IndyCar, I love just all racing in general,” said the 2025 Formula 1 Champion.
He also spoke about a special achievement he would want to achieve, the triple crown. The Monaco Grand Prix, the Indy 500, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Norris, whose association runs deep with McLaren, drew attention to the fact that McLaren’s return to Le Mans in 2027 makes it enticing.
“Whether it is the Indy 500 or just IndyCar in general, I know the Indy 500 is the one. And obviously, it’s a part of the Triple Crown for McLaren as well. I won Monaco, which is part one done. I’ve obviously got a championship now under my belt. There’s two more to do.”
Norris added, “I don’t know if I want to kind of, I’ve never had a thought of trying to achieve the Triple Crown, but obviously I’ve kind of ticked one of the boxes already. And now I kind of come here as the warm-up for it all. And seeing Fernando attempt it and things like that always makes it more inviting.”
Triple Crown’s Only Victor
Fernando Alonso became the most recent driver to attempt the Triple Crown when he missed the Monaco Grand Prix in 2017 to take on the Indy 500. Alonso qualified as high as 5th, but his race ended early due to mechanical troubles.
Alonso attempted the 500 two more times, but his best finish is 21st place in 2020 for Arrow McLaren.
Several drivers have attempted the Triple Crown. Jim Clark, Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, and Jacques Villeneuve are all F1 champions who have also won the Indy 500 but never won in Monaco.
Juan Pablo Montoya won in Monaco in 2003 and at the Brickyard in 2000 and 2015, but never at Le Mans.
Alonso has won in Monaco twice in 2006 and 2007, and he’s also a two-time winner at Le Mans in 2018 and 2019. AJ Foyt won the Indy 500 four times, and in 1967, he even added Le Mans to his trophy cabinet.
But the only person to have successfully achieved the Triple Crown is Graham Hill. Hill has a remarkable 5 wins in Monaco, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1968, and 1969.
He won at the Brickyard in 1966. And the two-time F1 drivers’ champion completed the triple crown in 1972 by winning at Le Mans.
With McLaren participating in all three historic races next year, Lando Norris may want to try his luck at the Triple Crown with two more historic wins to tick off.
