All speculations around Scott Dixon’s future can now finally be laid to rest, well, almost. Chip Ganassi Racing has released a statement on X, confirming the 45-year-old New Zealander’s departure from the team at the end of the season. 

An excerpt from the statement reads, “Because of everything we've accomplished together, and the legacy Scott has built here, we believed it was important to give him the opportunity to finish his career at Chip Ganassi Racing, and we made him a multi-year offer to do just that. We respect that he's chosen a different path and wish him nothing but continued success.”

Before the announcement was made official, IndyCar presenter and FOX broadcaster Will Buxton had responded to Racer.com’s Marshall Pruett, who had stated that Dixon was leaving Ganassi for McLaren. Buxton agreed with Pruett’s comparison of the situation to the NFL great Tom Brady’s move from the New England Patriots to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 

He said, “The report is real. The news is undeniably huge. Everything I’ve heard over the past two weeks and, in particular, the last few days confirms to me that Dixon to McLaren is 100% a done deal. Marshall’s Brady-Tampa Bay comparison is bang on. It’s a seismic moment."

Dixon has been a mainstay at Chip Ganassi Racing since 2003 and is also a six-time series champion (2003, 2008, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2020). He also won the 2008 Indianapolis 500 and holds the record for most wins by an active driver (59).

Will Buxton and Kevin Harvick feel Dixon should “do something else”

On the SPEED podcast a few days ago, the two presenters had discussed Dixon’s future prospects when he started getting linked to a move to McLaren. They felt that Dixon has nothing left to prove in the series, and that they would much rather see him end his career with Chip Ganassi. 

After Harvick responded positively to the question of Dixon potentially risking his legacy by moving to Arrow McLaren, Buxton had said, “So go and do something else, right? Go and create something. And we know he's mega in endurance, right? 

Outside IndyCar, Dixon is also a three-time winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona, and a two-time winner of the Petit Le Mans.

His exploits outside of IndyCar were also discussed on the podcast, and it is believed that Arrow McLaren, which is also debuting a new hypercar in 2027, could use Dixon in a dual-capacity role considering his record.
