Jaguar's Controversial Reboot Still Going Ahead Despite Backlash

Jaguar isn't showing any signs of slowing down its reboot, and their Investor Day showed the same.

During the annual event at their facility in Gaydon, UK, the carmaker confirmed that its first new electric car, the Type 01, will be launched in October this year.

Leonard Hoornik, the Chief Growth Officer at Jaguar Land Rover, made it clear that the company is pushing its Jaguar Electric Architecture, even though the reboot campaign and the direction received plenty of backlash.

“We will launch it in October in New York in a very, very special way,” he said as seen in the video Jaguar Land Rover posted on YouTube. He also reiterated that the Type 01 comes with a 50:50 weight distribution, which was made possible due to its electric powertrain.

Its electric powertrain uses three motors, and it is expected to produce a claimed 1000PS and 1300Nm of torque, with regen braking, all-wheel drive, and torque vectoring likely to be added in the features list.

Jaguar had announced its all-electric intentions back in 2021. While it was not selling cars, the carmaker focused on retooling its plant for EV production. Then, in 2024, it announced its rebirth via the ‘Copy Nothing’ campaign. Over two years later, that reboot is making a lot of progress.

That's because the Type 01 is basically the production version of the Type 00 prototype that was first revealed sometime in 2024.

While the prototype was shown as a two-door model, the Type 01 will be a proper four-door GT with a low stance and a long hood. And despite its size, the Type 01 is reported to feature a small storage space.

When it finally hits the markets, it will answer how their reboot pans out. However, it won't determine the direction the company has planned for the next few years.

Land Rover To Focus On Hybrids And A Next-Gen Discovery

At the same event, P.B Balaji, the CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, confirmed that it has five launches in the next 18 months. These will include two new cars built on the new EMA platform.

The Range Rover Electric and the Range Rover Sport Electric are also expected to be shown sometime later this year. Both cars will continue to use the MLA platform, which is also hugely flexible in terms of powertrain options.

Land Rover has not shared a lot of details yet, but it said, “It will be brought into the future with propulsion flexibility and innovations in product design, with announcements on confirmed plans to come.”

Lastly, JLR will also capitalize on its partnership with Stellantis, focusing specifically on the US market. What that will turn out to be, however, is hard to tell for now.
