“I’d Rather Not Fight With Him”: Toto Wolff Left Fearing Lewis Hamilton’s Title Charge Against Mercedes

With his victory at the Barcelona-Catalunya GP, Lewis Hamilton became the first driver to win a race for both his current team, Ferrari, and his former Mercedes-AMG team. If there is someone who truly knows what the 41-year-old driver is capable of, it has to be none other than Toto Wolff.

Wolff and Hamilton have a history from the driver’s 12 years at the team, where he won six out of his seven titles. The Silver Arrows Team Principal told ESPN.com he is aware of Hamilton’s potential and would rather try not to cross him.

I'd rather not fight with him for a title, because I know what he's capable of. I've seen it many years where suddenly the Lewis Hamilton train started to go, and then it's very difficult to stop it. If he smells blood, he goes.”

Wolff also added that Hamilton is a real threat to Mercedes’ chances at a World Title this season, given his recent performances at Monaco and Canada. During both those weekends, he performed well across various sessions and finished P2 in feature races.

These performances were building up to his victory at Barcelona, where he and Ferrari showcased a strategic masterclass, and were also helped with a bit of luck. Using a three-stop strategy, the driver pitted during the Virtual Safety Car prompted by Fernando Alonso’s crash.

With 24 laps to go, he drove out of the pits just in time and got a two-second lead over George Russell. He then clocked some very fast laps and crossed the finish line, building a comfortable gap of nearly 19.5 seconds.

This reminds us of something linking Wolff and Hamilton from earlier in the season.

Toto Wolff: “Still Our Driver”

During the qualifying sessions at the Chinese Grand Prix, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli finished 1-2, while Hamilton rounded up the podium behind them. The official X handle of the Mercedes-AMG F1 Team took this opportunity and filmed Wolff’s reaction to the moment.

Wolff admitted that he was still not used to seeing Hamilton in Maranello outfits, despite the driver having left Mercedes in 2025. He jokingly added that he thought the Mercedes team was somehow fielding three cars at the race.

When someone pointed out that Hamilton is in the Ferrari team now, Wolff simply smiled at the camera and said, “(Lewis Hamilton is) still our driver.” The heartwarming clip went viral instantly, gaining a lot of attention from fans.

Way better than seeing him smash headphones. Or is it?
