Iconic Motorbike Brand Unveils New Twin-Cylinder Engine Concept Bike As Legacy Keeps Dwindling
Power cruisers may not be a very popular motorcycle segment globally, but there’s no denying how great they are when ridden at highway speeds. While a handful of bikemakers exist in that segment, it appears Jawa might be showing some interest in it.
At the Brno bike show, the Czech manufacturer showcased a concept bike, which was simply named the 1000 Sport Cruiser. This is a format Jawa has not really done before, and based on reports, there will be just 15 units of this motorcycle, so it will be highly exclusive.
The 1000 Sport Cruiser will be powered by a twin-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine, but no exact performance numbers are known just yet. Given the name of the motorcycle, it has to be a 999cc unit.
However, according to reports, the engine produces close to 113bhp of power and has a kerb weight of 240kg, which means handling isn’t likely to be its strong suit.
The bike has been developed in collaboration with the Chinese brand Jedi. Its design seems to take inspiration from the 730 Twin, with a similar headlamp casing and the overall body shape.
In terms of hardware, no exact specifications are known either, but from the images, it is evident that the bike uses Showa suspension units and Brembo brake callipers on both ends.
The bike is said to be in pre-production stages, and that raises the possibility of the bike undergoing serious changes before being deemed roadworthy. Reports also suggest that all 15 units of the motorcycle are already accounted for, hence you probably won’t be among those to get your hands on it.
How is Jawa doing globally?
The Jawa Moto s.r.o. brand continues to exist today and sells a variety of motorcycles made in collaboration with various technical partners. These bikes include the 400 Geeny, the 750 JD series, the 730 Twin, and the original 350 2T with its iconic two-stroke engine, which is reportedly still sold in Latin American markets.
The brand also has newer motorcycles in its lineup via its Indian arm, Classic Legends, through which it sells the Jawa 350, the 42, 42 Bobber, and the Perak. However, CL is a separate entity altogether, which only holds the rights to the Jawa name in India and a few other global markets.
While the brand has been around since 1929, it enjoyed popularity in the 1950s and 60s and was still quite strong at least until the end of the two-stroke engine era. Today, it has a rather modest presence globally. Neither does it sell in huge volumes, nor does it compete with mainstream brands.
However, while many Eastern European brands are no longer, Jawa has continued to exist, thanks to partnerships with various brands such as Sutter Industries, RVM, and Jedi.
