“I Need to Have an Attitude Adjustment”: Katherine Legge Frustrated After Indy 500 Exit

Following an unfortunate end to The Double, Katherine Legge tried to gain her composure before moving to the Coca-Cola 600.

Legge was visibly emotional after the race. “I need to have an attitude adjustment because right now I’m p***** and disappointed,” Legge confessed. “And I need to get on that plane and try and get into the right mindset.”

It all came down to a moment on the 18th lap of the race. When Ryan Hunter-Reay spun out while coming out of Turn 2, he attempted to keep his car out of the wall. That's when Legge arrived at the scene.

“I can’t see anything at this point,” Legge explained. “I went for the high side of the track and then came back up the track. Last minute I had to go left. And it just wasn’t enough time for the car to catch up enough.”

Attempting to make her way through the smoke, Legge tried to go down the inside, but the lack of visibility during her effort to avoid Hunter-Reay meant she hit the inside wall.

As the sixth driver ever to attempt The Double, Legge was trying to follow in the footsteps of Tony Stewart and finish both races, becoming the only female driver to do so.

“I was hoping that we were just back there kind of saving fuel and chilling out,” she said. “I had Graham behind me, and we were just riding, trying to get through the majority of the laps to be really sensible because I wanted to make the 1100 miles.”

However, with the unfortunate end at Indy, her start at Charlotte wasn’t a fortunate one either.

Struggles Continue in Charlotte

After crashing at Indy, Katherine Legge immediately took a flight to Charlotte in an attempt to change her fortune and finish the second leg of her “Double” attempt.

Legge started the Coca-Cola 600 from 37th after qualifying was canceled because of rain, forcing NASCAR to set the field using a performance metric.

Multiple cautions and long green-flag runs defined the race. Legge avoided major incidents at Charlotte. However, a big moment occurred when, on Lap 209, her No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet struggled with a tire issue.

Attempting to pit her car, Legge wasn't able to make it into the stall in time before the right front wheel came off. Fortunately, she managed to limp her car into the stall as the caution flag waved.

In the end, she finished the race with a 31st-place finish at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
