Ferrari boss shuts down Toto Wolff's 'cheating' accusation in F1 budget debate
Ferrari wants none of the 'cheating' accusations thrown at it this week. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff made an eyebrow-raising statement after the F1 Austrian GP last weekend, questioning Ferrari's rate of upgrades this season.
So far in 2026, per ESPN, the Scuderia has introduced a total of 32 upgraded components spread across months. Meanwhile, Mercedes is at 17. This led to Wolff questioning how Ferrari was managing the budget cap, which limits teams to operating with the same amount of money to level the playing field.
Addressing Wolff's comments during Friday's FIA team principal press conference at Silverstone, Vasseur said:
"I found it quite ironic from Toto, coming from Toto and Mercedes. When Red Bull is developing or when Mercedes is developing, they are genius. When we are developing, we are cheating. I think you have to calm down with this. We didn’t bring more parts than Red Bull or another one. I don’t know if it was a joke, but…"

Vasseur was immediately asked if he thought "Toto was accusing you of cheating?" To that, he replied:
"If you think that we overshoot the cost cap, for me it’s… going into this direction."
Ferrari has brought two heavy upgrade packages this season in Miami and Spain, while Mercedes brought one in Canada. In Barcelona on June 14, Lewis Hamilton steered a heavily upgraded SF26 (eight updated components that weekend) to become the first non-Mercedes driver to win this season.
Though Hamilton has closed the gap to the Mercedes drivers, the Silver Arrows remain the top dog. And with scope for more upgrades across 2026, they could widen the gap again.
Toto Wolff expects to cut down Ferrari's advantage in second half of 2026 F1 season
With the budget cap, which was introduced in 2021, the nature of the upgrading competition is predictable. The teams that bring heavy upgrades early in a season become vulnerable to those that gather more learnings and apply them later.
This means Mercedes can strike back at Ferrari later in the season. In Austria, Toto Wolff said (via F1.com):
"We're a little bit surprised that Ferrari can throw these huge updates at the car in the way they do. In my opinion, they need to be running out of money soon -- cost cap money -- because we can't do that.
"We're simply lacking the buffer and the cost cap to be able to bring so many parts in the way they do. So hopefully that's going to change towards the end of the season when they won't be able to bring any parts anymore. At least, let's say, the logic would say that, and we're going to come up with more."
Wolff expressed his surprise about how Ferrari, which is "not slowing down," seems to have "limitless" upgrades available.
Moreover, Ferrari's upgrades are working. Lewis Hamilton took pole in the British GP Sprint Qualifying on Friday, outpacing Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli by 0.011 seconds.
