Fernando Alonso Gets Support for Indy 500 Return as F1 Icon Addresses Triple Crown Attempt
On the active F1 grid, Fernando Alonso is the only driver who has the closest chance at conquering motorsport's Triple Crown. The two-time F1 champion has won the Monaco GP (2006 and 2007) and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Indy 500 is his only remaining challenge.
Alonso has attempted the Indy 500 thrice, but failed to qualify for the race once, and mechanical issues derailed the two other attempts. Jenson Button, who is the ambassador for Aston Martin, the team Alonso drives for in F1, feels that the Spaniard should attempt the race again to conquer the Triple Crown.
Button recently penned a post on AMR's website. Named "Jenson's Journal | Entry 2," an excerpt of the entry was about his Triple Crown ambitions. The 2009 F1 champion wrote:
"I've completed one leg (Monaco GP), but I don't envisage getting all three. I've had a couple of attempts at Le Mans, but winning there hasn't quite happened. I'd love to drive the Aston Martin Valkyrie around Le Mans one day though. Perhaps we can make it happen. It would be my chance to finally drive an Adrian Newey-designed car."

Turning his attention to the Indy 500 and how Fernando Alonso should have another go, Button added:
"As for the Indy 500? I've got huge respect for those drivers, but that's not for me. Fernando probably has the best shot of anyone at completing the Triple Crown because he's already won Monaco and Le Mans, and he's come close at Indy, having led there. If he wants another go at it, he absolutely has a chance."
Earlier this year, Fernando Alonso's business partner, Oriol Servia, emphasized that the Aston Martin driver wouldn't even think about the Indy 500 or any other event while he has a full-time F1 contract. However, interest from his past ally to bring him back to the Greatest Spectacle in Racing is still alive.
Zak Brown Wants Fernando Alonso Back At McLaren For The Indy 500
Fernando Alonso made his Indy 500 debut in 2017 with McLaren, which fielded the entry with Honda and Andretti Autosport (now Andretti Global). On debut, he impressively qualified in fifth, led 27 laps of the race, and was in contention for victory if not for an engine failure.

In his second attempt with McLaren in 2019, Alonso failed to even qualify for the race. It was a colossal disappointment. Returning again in 2020, the Spaniard qualified in a lowly 26th place, gained over 10 places, but after suffering a clutch issue, finished 21st.
However, in February this year, Zak Brown admitted he would love to have Fernando Alonso back.
"Post that (Hunter-Reay's 2026 stint with Arrow McLaren) and post-when Fernando Alonso stops in F1, this is his last contractual year, doesn't mean he won't continue, but I talk to him about it (Indy 500) every time I see him, and I think we've got a car that can win the Indy 500. I think he's very capable of winning the Indy 500," Brown said via Motorsport.com.
Reminiscing about the near-success they had before the tech-related heartbreaks, Brown added:
"Loved the first year, I mean, it was magic. And I'd love to see Fernando back at the Indy 500 with us, and that is something I'll continue to bug him about."
For now, Alonso's F1 future is up in the air, with Aston Martin's performance in the dumps under the new regulations. Do you think we'll see him at the 2027 Indy 500 with Arrow McLaren?
