F1 Penalty: George Russell Apologizes to Stewards After Big Fine
George Russell had a strong start to his Canadian Grand Prix race weekend, converting a Sprint Pole into Sprint victory. However, he failed to make it count in the feature race, as his efforts came undone after an engine failure.
The Mercedes driver secured pole for the feature race on Sunday, and was leading it before coming to an abrupt stop on Lap 31. In the moment, the reason for his stop was unknown to viewers, but out of frustration, Russell threw his headrest out of the car.
This action caused him to be penalised by the FIA. The stewards handed him a €5,000 fine (~ $5800) with immediate effect, but the punishment was suspended for 12 months, as long as he does not commit a similar offence during this period.
During FIA’s hearing of the incident, the British driver apologised to the officials. In A statement put out by the FIA read:
"He apologised to the stewards for his action and acknowledged that it did not set a good example and offered to apologise publicly. The Stewards acknowledged this and accepted his apology."
Before his retirement, George Russell and and teammate Kimi Antonelli were engaged in an intense battle. The race lead kept on shifting between the two drivers as they fought for position in Turns 1, 10, and 13 for crucial championship points.
While Russell DNFed during one such battle, went onto the grass, and came to a dead stop, his 19-year-old teammate went on to win his fourth consecutive F1 race of 2026.
The 27-year-old British driver stays second in the standings, but the deficit to Antonelli now stands at 43 points.
George Russell Gets Blunt About 2026 Championship Fight
After George Russell retired from the Canadian GP, it was Kimi Antonelli’s race to win. This opened up a huge points gap between the first and second place, and all Russell could do was lament his plight.
During his post-race interview, he said, "Right now it's his to lose. He is so many points ahead. It feels like the gods don't want me to be in this fight. But, you know, the pressure's off. Go out, enjoy every single race. Try to win every single race. And I've got nothing to lose."
Russell has had a couple of instances that can be chalked up to bad luck. In Japan, the Briton fell victim to an ill-timed caution, as he made his stop before the safety car came out.
This gave the Italian driver a free pit stop under the safety car and eventually handed him the win. However, there are 17 races to go, and it is too early to predict how the championship fight will pan out.
